Levity (2003)

Mild Peril Movie ReviewNow here’s a real surprise. Levity, which you won’t have heard of despite its great cast, is the directorial debut of Ed Solomon, best known as the co-creator of crazy comedies like the Men in Black and Bill and Ted movies (and now you know why the bad guy in B&T’s Bogus Journey was called ‘De Nomolos’).

Although I loved most of Solomon’s movies to date, I’m pleased to say that this is a laugh-free tale of inner-city crime and redemption, with Billy Bob Thornton released from prison and trying to make amends for his past. Thornton is great as (almost) always, Morgan Freeman is in the cast as always, and there are also fine performances from Holly Hunter and Kirsten Dunst.

It’s slow and miserable (the title is ironic) but very moving and convincing. Solomon does a thoughtful commentary track on the DVD and it will be interesting to see where he goes from here.
