Batman Begins (2005)
The best of this year’s Big Movies for me was Christopher Nolan’s striking and ambitious Batman Begins. It should really have been called Batman Rescued, as I still have bitter memories of paying money to see Schumacher’s abominations. Not only does Nolan manage to regain the dark knight’s credibility from those disasters, he also manages to improve on Tim Burton’s take on this universe (not sure this month’s editor will agree on that one…).
Christian Bale is more or less perfect and the supporting cast is composed of fine actors who fall in with the serious tone. Michael Caine is slightly miscast, and Cillian Murphy is a bit too young as The Scarecrow, but apart from that the only fault is that Wayne Manor seems to be in a different country from Gotham City. The action scenes are loud and impressive, the production design is great and the extras on the DVD almost match the quality of the movie. I’m looking forward to the sequel already.
